Moe Siegel and his wife, Gerry moved from the Bronx to Levittown where they bought their first (and only) home on Mill Lane in 1951. There they raised 3 daughters.
Moe Siegel is one of the original founders of Yours Ours Mine Community Center. He lived across the street (corner of Mill Lane and Center Lane) of what is now the YOM Community Center for over 50 years.
In the early 60's, he found that many youth hung out on the Village Green, by the stores, making noise, leaving beer bottles and other trash in the area, including his property and many of his neighbors. He spoke to some parents and it was decided to establish a place where youngsters could go to socialize, mingle and indulge in some activities.
In 1964, the Youth Direction Council was formed and housed where Fred’s Deli is today. In 1969, a Youth Service Director was hired (Jim Edmondson) and the YOM Committee merged with the "Youth Direction Council" and soon moved into the supermarket, which is now the Yours Ours Mine Community Center.
Moe became a Board Member, a post which he held until his illness. He served as Vice President and Treasurer. He was chairman of several committees such as Fund Raising, Finance, and Program Review. Throughout his years in the community, Moe was very involved with and cared deeply about the welfare of Levittown, its youth and the YOM Community Center.
He not only volunteered as a Board member and Officer, he worked tirelessly on raising funds. He was the foremost contact person with businesses to obtain donations and sponsorships; he worked late into the night helping to run the agency's Bingo(s) and other fund raising events. Moe was well known for his jokes and sense of humor.
Later, as his health waned and his illness showed its sad effects, he was one of the persons to use the services of the "Adult Day Care" program. It is therefore only fitting that we honor him by dedicating the main activity room of YOM’s Adult Day Care Center to him, by naming it the "Moe Siegel" room.
Date of dedication, Monday May 9, 2005 at 2:30 p.m. at 148 Center Lane, the YOM Pavilion.
